James Edward McCall (1880–1963) was the son of former slaves. While studying at Howard University, he contracted typhoid fever and went blind. McCall is perhaps better known for his work as a journalist. From 1917 to 1920, he published the Emancipator, an Alabama-based African American newspaper that he printed alongside his wife, Margaret McCall.
