Edith Nesbit (1858–1924) was an English poet and author best remembered today for her contemporary fantasies for children — including The Wouldbegoods (1901) and Five Children and It (1902) — which have influenced everyone from Edward Eager, C.S. Lewis, and Diana Wynne Jones to J.K. Rowling. She was also co-founder of the socialist Fabian Society, and author of horror, supernatural, and proto-sf stories.
