Grok My Enthusiasm (22)

“Don’t you think you should take those down?” said Tara, half an hour before the dinner guests were due to arrive. The sheets on my clothesline were blocking the spectacular hundred-mile view: multiple horizons of extinct volcanoes, like ocean waves, hazy blue tinged pink and gold. I built this house for that view. And I hadn’t even missed it.
The white sheets scrim the fierceness of the setting sun, which for a time is blinding. They are beautiful from the corner of my eye; mesmerizing if I turn my full gaze to them. Undulating in the breeze, they make the air itself visible. I watch them catching the scent of growing alfalfa from the field beyond, watered by a stream from the high mountains running through 500-year-old irrigation ditches. That bright green, so delicious in the high desert of northern New Mexico, is the color of freshness, shadowing the white, leaching into the cotton fibers. Later, when I climb into a bed made with those sheets, the smells of grass and sage will mist around me.
I love those old photos of Italian streets (in New York or in Naples) with washing lines running between the upper windows. They are a picture of the community body: the lines like veins connecting each household to another, clothes invoking the bodies that will inhabit them, the echo of hands fixing clothespins and hauling in the lines, flashes of color which lift the hearts of those who will wear them.
But why is mine the only clothesline I see? Does it look low-rent to have laundry drying on a line? Is it really too much effort to spend ten minutes hanging out? Are we trying to pretend we don’t have dirty clothes, or underclothes? Surely not in Taos, where the freak flags fly proudly. But when the flags get washed, they’re loaded into the dryer by people who are struggling to pay their bills and campaign against climate change. Utterly baffling.
My line is 40 feet long and stretches the length of my covered portal, with hooks holding it up on five posts. Yes, I’m boasting: size matters! In theory, it retracts into a pale blue plastic housing that suggests a public restroom. I had a wooden box made that hinges down to cover it when the clothesline is retracted. But it rarely is, so the lavatorial housing remains in view. A tiny price to pay, and a gentle reminder: nothing truly worth having comes free.
