Grok My Enthusiasm (3)

One in a weekly series of enthusiastic posts contributed by HILOBROW friends and regulars.
The cultural contours of my adolescence could be defined by the East-West vector of a bus line. The 77, to be specific, which took a traveller on the gradient from the quietly boring, middle-class and aggressively normative world of the West, to what I fancied to be the culmination of all higher human thought, in the East at Harvard Square. This journey would always invariably end up at Cambridge’s Million Year Picnic.
MYP was my first Comix Shop. This isn’t to say it was my first visit to a place to purchase comic books — my Iron Man and Avengers fix had been satisfied by the rather predictable superhero-and-trading-card store up the road from me for years. But MYP, as a proper Comix Shop, presented a unified field theory of comics I had never really considered before. That my Avengers trades, the Life In Hell compendiums I pored over, and the Asterix from my boyhood could all be defined under one genre was a revelation to my credulous young mind.
It helped that it was dungeon-like, and felt like accessing a speakeasy. It helped that the tiny, basement-window store displays, ankle-high at street level (perfect for distracted children) always contained bizarre, invariably Japanese toys. And, to be honest, it helped that their “Adults Only” section was loosely enforced — I learned a lot from those lurid paperback books, sharing the too-small space with others who refused to make eye contact in the cramped area.
I discovered Corto Maltese and Lucky Luke, Moebius and Woodring, RAW and The Katzenjammer Kids at MYP. It thankfully remains there to this day, an oasis of countercultural thought and art. The very fact that it still exists at all, beacon-like, at the end of the 77 line, feels like an act of protest in and of itself.
