Twenty-fourth in a series of thirty posts by John Hilgart. HiLobrow yields to no one in our admiration for his spelunkery into the mysterious and gorgeous depths of comics that we grew up reading without ever noticing what he’s shown us. Check out the manifesto and FAQ of Hilgart’s 4CP project.
One of my favorite abstracts, which I thought of loosely as a jazz organist (maybe Jimmy Smith), from 4CP’s early days. It was extracted from a Fantastic Four reprint of the first appearance of The Watcher’s home planet. Gray and rather dull as a panel, the zoom revealed a deliciously colorful atomic structure. For contrast, I’ve provided an alternate reprint of the same panel, which, though very colorful at the panel level, isn’t very interesting when enlarged.
CREDITS: Art by Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko. Originally in Fantastic Four #13. Scanned from two late Sixties reprints.
