I like this image for a number of reasons, but perhaps mainly because it situates a human subject within a network — which is how we live in culture. Normally, the network is unseen, however; which is why paranoid thrillers and apophenic adventures are so deeply satisfying… because we’re all aware, at some intuitive level, that we’re enmeshed in a network of meaning that we can’t directly perceive.
Schlemmer’s image could almost be the cover of a 1960s apophenic thriller… or a movie poster.
