SCHEMATIZING (43)

One in a series of posts via which HILOBROW’S Josh Glenn will attempt to depict the intellectual and emotional highs and lows of developing a semiotic schema.
From MoMA website: “Black lines radiating outward from the round form at the painting’s center resemble the spokes of a bicycle wheel, like the one also on view in this gallery that so fascinated the artist’s brother Marcel Duchamp. Circles — some hand-painted, others cut from printed silver paper — evoke a flickering motion. This work’s ambiguous title, which brings together the nouns ‘solitude’ and ‘funnel,’ suggests a mechanical counterpart to a psychological state.”
So much of Suzanne Duchamp’s work troubles the “mathematical” precision popular among many of her fellow avant-garde artists. Here we find something like the G-Schema… but it’s more haphazard, fluid, internally inconsistent… a more perfect reflection of how culture works than any geometrically rationalized schema can offer. Here’s another way to put the same notion: “A mechanical counterpart to a psychological state.”
