From a visit to the always inspiring MIT Museum — in a new location since 2022. I was there (as an audience member) for the event Write Science: Twelve Tomorrows: How Science Fiction uses Today’s Technology to Envision the Future. I didn’t take any photos of the Hugo and Nebula-winning sf authors assembled there — Elizabeth Bear, James Patrick Kelly, Suzanne Palmer, Ken Liu… though we all went out to dinner on the MIT Press’s tab after. Nice!
The sort of thing one finds when wandering through RISD’s Industrial Design building.
HILOBROW friend Deb Chachra is a materials scientist and author of the 2023 book How Infrastructure Works — which has received glowing reviews. The sticker at center here is one she created; it represents Wales’s Dinorwig Power Station — a pumped-storage hydroelectric scheme known locally as Electric Mountain, or Mynydd Gwefru.
One last get-together with my RISD Master of Industrial Design students…. Dani Epstein, Yasmine Hassan, Vir Naidu, Elbert Giron, Farida Abousteit, Yuxin Jin, Jack Dumala, Monica Bhyrappa, Anna Glass, Yijing Huang, Ethan Howard, Kipper Reinsmith, Morong Li, Zixuan Zhang, Mina Kim, Dong Yoon Shin, Dominic Rishe, Sarah Mann. I’m excited to see what they accomplish.
Fun visit to Saugerties, Woodstock, and Kingston with our friends the Parkers and Klees.
This past year, I kept a record of art I’ve encountered — in Boston and New York, mostly, but also in Munich, Bolzano, and via the Public Domain Review — on the door to the basement. Museum and gallery shows, mostly, but other stuff as well — including a postcard that the MIT Press created for the RADIUM AGE series, and an image from Colin Dickey’s MELANCHOLY OBJECT zine.
