HERMENAUTICA (10)

One in a series of posts featuring pages from Hermenaut, a DIY intellectual zine/journal published by HILOBROW’s Josh Glenn from 1992 through 2000-01.
James Parker, whom I met around the time that issue #1 came out, and who remains one of my closest friends, for a while contributed a music-criticism column titled NOISY PARKER. James had a different title in mind for the column, but I pleaded with him to let me use this one after he told me that he and his two brothers were once briefly in a band called Noisy Parker. So good.
For some reason the opening words of this particular installment — “About this hardcore thing you’ve really got to be binocular” — have lodged themselves in my memory, and I repeat them to myself idiotically pretty much every time I think about hardcore punk. Which is not very often — but more often than you might think.
