Eye Candy (28)

This week’s Eye Candy is focused, as we all are, on the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a crisis it’s all hands on deck, and the military metaphor is no accident. Iconic imagery from times of conflict still resonates with our attention. I’m a designer. So I decided to design a series of Public Service Announcements using some classic posters from the past: introducing my new and ongoing series of COVID-19 PSA Posters.
The historical perspective on this crisis is not just interesting, but helpful for insight and contextualization: we overcame adversity before, and we can do it again. Design can play its part to amplify these still-relevant messages from the past.
For inspiration I am drawing from the eras of WWI and WW2, the 1918 flu, The Great Depression, and even the 1939 New York World’s Fair, among other sources. The latter was not a crisis but a celebration of community; and even now we see so many community members worth celebrating: nurses and doctors, healthcare workers, firefighters, police and other first responders, grocery workers, delivery workers, drivers, bus and train conductors, the military, zookeepers, as well as everyone making calls to distant friends and family, or volunteering for those unable to go out. And so much more, in actions big and small.
These posters and animations are, and will be, free to use and distribute, for print, web, and social media.
