I used to think The Honeymooners was based on The Flintstones. I loved the idea of setting the prehistoric cartoon show in the recent present, and became such a fan of Art Carney’s interpretation of Barney Rubble that in second grade I wrote him a fan letter and he sent me an autographed picture. I still have it.
The Honeymooners was less like a TV show for me than it was my introduction to theater: one box set with two doors and a window. Ralph would shout out the window at his neighbors as if he were in an Elmer Rice play. Or he’d fall prey to a get-rich scheme, fail pathetically, and launch into an apologetic monologue to Alice worthy of a Clifford Odets drama about the desperate hopes of the working class.
The Honeymooners wasn’t quite television, yet. It was before Desilu Productions and their invention of the “swing” set. It was mostly just a stage with a camera locked in place. The slow, deadpan reactions of vaudeville, somehow working in a single apartment set, hanging in the nowhere of broadcast television.
Jackie Gleason and Art Carney may as well have been Vladimir and Estragon. The world was defined by the relationship of these two men. Total relativity. At least Norton got out of the room, occasionally. He lived upstairs, in an apartment we (almost) never saw. The real world.
I watched The Honeymooners from my playpen, in the room that used to be the TV room of our house. My brother — my primary social contact — could come in and out. But like Ralph, I was stuck in there in my cube, dreaming and scheming of the way I would be set free.
