One of 25 installments in a series of enthusiastic posts analyzing and celebrating a few of our favorite TV shows from the Fifties (1954–1963).
I don’t think it’s an accident that what sticks with me about Naked City was the mood. Its characters move and dress as if re-enacting noir tropes, whatever their actual intention.
The TV show, based on Jules Dassin’s magnificent 1948 film, had a stop-and-start history: Its first season of half-hour episodes — entirely written by Stirling Silliphant, who went on to create Route 66 — fared poorly and resulted in cancellation, only for ABC to revive it as a one-hour series with a different cast of cop characters. The police procedural aspects of the “65th Precinct” took a back seat to the endless parade of guest stars and up-and-comers who would become famous: Burt Reynolds, Jessica Walter, Piper Laurie, Jack Klugman, and Walter Matthau, to name a mere few.
I watched the show when I was a young, and the sense I have now, revisiting it, is that Naked City knew it would be a time capsule of an ever-changing New York City. No doubt that is why episodes were shot not in a studio, but on location — mostly in the Bronx. This is a show about much more than the “eight million stories” that the announcer invoked at the end of each episode. It’s also about lost places and modes of transport, the Rechter’s Delicatessens, the Royal Barber Shops, the Third Avenue Els. The skyline is eerily familiar and jarringly different.
Naked City made viewers like me long to see New York for themselves. Of course that New York was long gone by the time I arrived. I’ve been looking for traces ever since, and when I find them it’s a beautiful thrill.
