One of 25 installments in a series of enthusiastic posts analyzing and celebrating a few of our favorite TV shows from the Fifties (1954–1963).
Perry Mason entered my life as a feature of slack times: most prominently catching the show in its PDX noon-time syndication slot during stretches of procrastination and/or unemployment. Then my pleasure was divided between amusement at the canned production values and a grudging suspense at the plot resolutions. It was only later that I could see the show’s hipness: the mid-century design, the elegant suits, the brushed steel lettering outside Perry’s office, even his phone — the almost Randian conflation of Good Taste with intellectual superiority. The contradiction at the heart of the show — just how, given that so many of his innocent-in-need clients are accepted pro bono, Perry manages to rake in enough to support this lifestyle — is never resolved.
Now what I love about the show is completely reversed. The mysteries themselves are fine — a few decent puzzles, but mostly routine. But I can’t get enough of the ensemble players gliding through subtle variations, like a shuffle of comedia scripts, the same procedural scenes again and again and again and never quite the same. I can’t get enough of Raymond Burr’s performance, charming and withheld, commanding and oddly gentle. Most of all, I can’t look away from the show as a social document, how the production choices reveal the past: the studio-perfect costuming, everyone smoking all the time (Paul Drake tapping his ash into a porcelain dish on the table as the gang celebrates in a Japanese restaurant!); the break-out location shoots at motels, lakes, roadsides; the mock-up sets of bars and nightclubs — it’s a catalogue of vanished Americana, somehow more telling for the ostensible seriousness of the show: always lives in the balance, always justice itself at stake. None of that having been resolved in the meantime, either.
