I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One reminds me of hoping.
I first listened to I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One the day it came out as I drove my Honda Civic to Lake Tahoe. I had new hiking boots that I didn’t really need for the kind of trip it was. They were aspirational, hopeful, just like the album.
The first two songs, “Return to Hot Chicken” and “Moby Octopad,” opened before me, making my heart feel big. “Sugarcube” followed, an explosion, my new favorite song at first listen. And though everyone loved “Autumn Sweater,” the first single off the album, I was — and still am — unconvinced. The real hoping, for me, is “Deeper into Movies.” That’s what falling in love feels like, loud in my ears, crushing and crescendo, the song on repeat. It always seemed to have a secret relationship with “Double Dare” from Painful, two albums prior. “Green Arrow” is the humming of crickets on a sunset or maybe even a quiet, up-all-night sunrise.
1997 was all about hoping and kissing, staving off a heartbreak about to happen on that roadtrip to Tahoe.
