Tom Nealon, Matthew Battles, Lucy Sante, James Parker — at Sorry, Charlie in Kingston (NY).

The Pink Whitney fad is still going strong in Boston’s West Roxbury neighborhood. Tito’s excited because our local “packie” (liquor store) gives out dog biscuits.

At the Market Research Society’s Semiotics and Cultural Insights 2025 conference, in London, Konrad Collao of Craft and Laurie Kearns, an insights manager for BBC Studios, presented on the topic of “how UK stories land in US culture.” Their talk shared learnings from an ambitious BBC Studios project to which my fellow US colleague Ramona Lyons and I contributed semiotic analysis based on a lot of TV watching. I’m grateful to Konrad for the public shout-out.

Overgrown trail blaze (maybe), Wallkill Valley Rail Trail (Kingston, NY).

One of many choose-your-own adventure books that I helped my kids create, 20+ years ago. I’m sorry to report that the villain (shown dead on the cover) is an octopus.

Susan and I often joke that Kingston (NY) has a Truman Show-like aspect. It feels like it was exactly tailored to the interests and tastes of Gen Xers now in their 50s….
PS: Here’s something I wrote about my enthusiasm for Schoolly D for HILOBROW fifteen years ago.
