While researching different types of latticework structures occurring in nature — see my SCHEMATIZING series — I became fascinated with a gorgeous glass sponge (a deep-sea creature whose tissues contain glass-like structural particles, called spicules, that are made of silica) known as the “Venus flower basket.”
In Japan and some other Asian cultures the husk of this creature is traditionally given as a wedding gift — because while still living, the sponge symbiotically houses two small shrimps, a male and a female, who live out their lives inside their glass house. There are many of these things available via eBay. So far, I’ve managed to restrain myself from actually buying one….
