SCREENSHOTS (3-24)

SCREENSHOTS is a monthly series of posts via which HILOBROW’s Josh Glenn reviews his most recent screenshots — before deleting them from the over-full Dropbox folder to which they’d been uploaded. Also see the PHOTO DUMP series.
This month, I received many installments for the forthcoming HILOBROW series REPO YOUR ENTHUSIASM — about “offbeat” movies from c. 1984–1993. The series will kick off in a few days.
Working on a forthcoming HILOBROW series called NOT TODAY, EBAY — about stuff I contemplated purchasing from eBay, but then heroically didn’t. Shown here: Detail of a vintage Typhoo (tea brand) “badge.” Why was I looking up vintage Typhoo merch on eBay? Who knows? — that’s what amuses me about this series.
Speaking of English tea, I’ve been working all month on a semiotic analysis of “English-ness” codes in British scripted TV shows. Which has entailed subscribing to the Britbox service, and watching shows like Blue Lights (shown here). A very entertaining project — and it’s always fun to collaborate with my friend and semio colleague Ramona Lyons, who is tackling British nonscripted and childrens’s shows.
Still beavering away at the RADIUM AGE ART series. Here’s a detail from Emil Bistrram’s “Projection No. 3 (Eye in the Sky)” (1936). Note to self, get in touch with Megan Prelinger….
Just beginning to take receipt of contributions to the VURT YOUR ENTHUSIASM series, which will run in 3Q2024. Here’s an illustration to accompany Adam McGovern’s essay on Annie Nocenti & Sean Phillips’ KID ETERNITY (1993).
Continuing to conduct/edit interviews for the MAKING SENSE series at SEMIOVOX. As of this writing, we’ve published 54 Q&As; at the moment, we have another 10 ready to go and 9 in progress. There’s no end in sight. (Shown above is Myriam Bouabid, in Tunisia.)
Still thinking about squared circles, 2D spheres, and the like for the ongoing SCHEMATIZING series. I spent a Sunday morning recently trying to wrap my head around the principle of perspective projection (of which stereographic projection — depicted above — is a special case). The series was originally intended to be 10 posts; I think it will end up being 50.
