MÖSH YOUR ENTHUSIASM is a series of 25 enthusiastic posts, contributed by 25 HILOBROW friends and regulars, on the topic of metal records from the Eighties (1984–1993, in our periodization schema). Series edited by Heather Quinlan. Also check out our MÖSH YOUR ENTHUSIASM playlist at Spotify.

Here’s a special announcement from MÖSH series editor Heather Quinlan…

ANNOUNCING… OUR MÖSH ESSAY CONTEST WINNER

In January, HILOBROW posted an open call for metalheads to submit short essays about their favorite metal songs from 1984–1993, Honestly, each entry we received was terrific. However, in life there can only be one winner — and in metal that’s usually Metallica. I really wasn’t looking to choose another essay on this band, since we already have two in the series… but I was won over by Tony Pacitti’s story about what Metallica’s 1984 instrumental “Call of Ktulu” once meant to him… and still does.

Congratulations, Tony! Not only do you win the esteem of those of us (like me) who used to spend our Saturday nights watching Headbangers Ball, you also win a copy of Christopher Cannon’s Keeping Records, a beautiful 2023 publication detailing his collection of 1,000 vinyl records.* Welcome to the MÖSH lineup.

We also have a runner-up: I’d like to raise a fist to James Scott Maloy’s essay on Accept’s “Midnight Mover” and Udo Dirkschneider.

A huge thank-you to everyone who submitted an essay to the contest. Some of you will hear from me the next time that I edit a metal-themed series for HILOBROW….

Yours in the mosh pit,

Heather

* Christopher also contributed a series installment on Neurosis’s “Lost.”
