The B-52s have such vivid visuals in their lyrics, which are perfectly congruent with the infectious, zany energy of the music. It’s very satisfying to match lyric visuals, musical tonality, and pulp paperback covers together, and obviously the lyrics of ‘Planet Claire’ required the cheesiest, pulpiest ’50s science fiction I could find. Ta-dah! I found one that highlighted an imperious alien queen with all the attitude the song brings — which is saying something.
I’ve also done covers for ‘Rock Lobster’ and ‘Love Shack’, but nothing matches the ongoing interest in ‘Planet Claire’ — although in fairness, many are purchased by — or for — people named Claire. Makes sense!
