We are delighted to present LINOCUT 2021, a series of prints created in 2021 by HILOBROW friend Lawry Hutcheson. Also see: LINOCUT 2020.

I’ve been making linocut calendar prints for three years now. They’re a place to record milestones for our kids and a way for me to continue making art while working as a high-school teacher and being a dad. I’ve got a small, monthly distribution among our immediate family; I show them at JP Open Studios, and — since last year I’ve been able to share them here thanks to my brother-in-law, who is HILOBROW’s editor.

I get my ideas from what’s going on around me or how I’m feeling or what I’m thinking about. The images are a mix of imagination, memory, and observation in different proportion. I generally try not to work from photographs.

I’m continuing to learn and try new techniques as I go. This year I started experimenting with multiple colors. (2019 was entirely blue; 2020 was single-color on white). It was a technical challenge at times, but really expanded the sorts of images I can make.

Pretty literal depiction of a blower-door test done to see how airtight our house was before insulation work.
