In a recent issue of his terrific newsletter Burning Shore, HILOBROW friend Erik Davis listed a few “favorite, mostly West Coast, experimental animations.” Cross-posted with his permission, this series brings you Erik’s list. Enjoy! — ed.
WALLACE BERMAN | ALEPH | 1958-1976
Berman was another undersung West Coast genius, an assemblage artist, collage meister, Beat mystic, and mail arts innovator. He was famously arrested for indecency at the Ferus Gallery in 1957 for a show that also included work by his close friend, the magical artist Cameron.
A native Angeleno Jew, Berman hunkered down in Topanga Canyon for much of his life but also spent time in San Francisco. A hipster in the holiest of senses, with a kabbalistic feel for the enchanted detritus of postwar culture, he refused to commercialize his art, which had far more to do with friends and family than it did with critics or shows.
Aleph is his one film, which was only finalized following the motorcycle accident that killed him in 1976.
