In a recent issue of his terrific newsletter Burning Shore, HILOBROW friend Erik Davis listed a few “favorite, mostly West Coast, experimental animations.” Cross-posted with his permission, this series brings you Erik’s list. Enjoy! — ed.
STAN BRAKHAGE | DOG STAR MAN | 1961-1964
Though Brakhage is the most famous and respected filmmaker on this list, that formal canonization can blind us to the mythopoetic weirdness and magic of his work.
Dog Star Man is probably his most well-known piece, a series of short films that are usually shown together, which makes the whole thing a bit of a trial, but you can also take it in chunks. Like poetry, which paradoxically combines the concreteness of words with the subtlest blooms in the mind, Brakhage’s film combines visionary abstraction with an almost tactile sense of material process.
Here is the beginning of “Prelude,” and hang tight during the opening minute of blackness.
