A DRINK TO DEATH
The success of any artist is now measured, to a large degree, by their work being displayed on any commercial merchandise. So, I was quite excited for the product labels and augmented reality, each adapted from my art, that Belaruska Vodka debuted in early 2020, shortly before the world fell apart. The new, elegant, elongated bottles with four images of my painting Love Birds, each incarnating a flavor and season, portray a couple in an embrace: the young woman’s head rests on Prince Death’s chest. She listens to his heart’s desires. Using a smartphone and the Belaruska Vodka app, one hears the accompaniment of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and the labels come alive with animations of a sexy, mystical and extremely romantic love story. Of course, this is how I saw labels for a commercial product; but the original painting was an illustration to accompany my dramatic story, “Postcard From Death.”
It is a story about a young woman’s survival from a brutal attack and rape, and her emotionally complex affair with her rapist. Historical truth is not only a collection of dry facts, but an intricate infusion of views and impressions of information, with the impossible, controversial, and even fantastic thrown in.
I call situations like this a negative inspiration, when misfortune elevates us into a higher form of existence and we create new and unexpected art in every possible form. From pain and sorrow rises captivating art much like the winged horse, Pegasus, arose from the poisonous bloody puddle of the decapitated mad-maiden Medusa, herself a victim of rape and envious revenge.
I think people will lift “my” vodka for many different life situations; from the very happy to the very sad, from birthdays to funerals. Hopefully, my art on these labels will spur the curiosity in some to know more about the story that’s behind any commercial art.
