THE ODD COUPLE | 1970–1975
Is first, a math joke; second a mystical proposition; and third a queer sign. “Odd” is another word for queer, while a couple is a couple is a couple. The odd number is Jack Klugman’s messy Oscar. The even number is Tony Randall’s neat Felix, a suicidal divorcé whom Oscar takes in.
Since he is the one who moved into Oscar’s, does Felix have equal say in the disposition of their now shared domicile? Some people say the partner with the highest standard should set the bar for household cleanliness. Others claim indifference: “If you want it clean, clean it yourself; I don’t care.” But Oscar does care. In one episode he demands that Felix stop cleaning. He prefers his disarray; he smells good to himself; his mess is his nest.
There’s no need to “queer” the show — it queers itself — but there’s another less obvious subtext here, about the gentile’s lost authority, his incompetence in the face of Oscar, a connoisseur of chaos, to whom he is indebted; with whom he is at odds. Felix, exasperated by the futility of converting the Jew to his order (so to speak), powerless to do so, is embattled by ambivalence and contradiction. The mess is inside.
