LOST OBJECTS (30)

One in an ongoing series of nonfiction stories about lost objects. In 2017, Project:Object’s Josh Glenn and Rob Walker asked 25 writers to tell us about a significant object they’d lost (or thrown away, or destroyed), then assigned these stories to 25 illustrators. The first Lost Objects series was such a hit with readers, and so fun for us to publish, that we’ve decided it deserves a sequel.
UPDATE: The Lost Objects book was published in September 2022 by Hat & Beard Press. Check it out!
It was more like a bottle than a jar. Small and cylindrical, with a white cap that screwed on at the top. There was a tiny gold label across the bottom of the thing with black lettering that announced the contents inside: ‘one baby octopus in liquid.’
This little trinket was more than just a curio to my seven year-old self; it was a solid representation of the one good vacation that I could remember taking with my family (to the Washington State coast, including a quick run up to Seattle). Mind you, I was also briefly lost on the beach during that trip and ran headlong into a shark that was being pulled down a wharf by fisherman, but I still recall those days as some of the few where everyone close to me seemed at peace and happy and in love.
Perpetually bobbing up and down in some clear mixture of formalin or alcohol, that baby sea creature fascinated me for years and years. Hidden away in my living room cubby hole — one was allotted to each of us, my brother and I — it sat alongside many other treasured items, including found arrowheads and pressed pennies and small containers of colored marbles and foreign coins. The pirate’s booty of youth.
And then it was gone. My parents divorced in my adult years and sold our house. When I was finally given a box with a crude label affixed to it (“Neil’s Things”) the jar was nowhere to be found (and I promise you, I looked and looked for it). Thrown out in the big move, no doubt, and buried deep in the earth in our local land fill. It’s probably there still, floating in the darkness, suspended forever in the silky blackness of an endless night.
In reality: it was nothing, it was stupid, it doesn’t matter.
God, how I miss it.
