LOST OBJECTS (29)

One in an ongoing series of nonfiction stories about lost objects. In 2017, Project:Object’s Josh Glenn and Rob Walker asked 25 writers to tell us about a significant object they’d lost (or thrown away, or destroyed), then assigned these stories to 25 illustrators. The first Lost Objects series was such a hit with readers, and so fun for us to publish, that we’ve decided it deserves a sequel.

In that eternity before I was aware of clocks and calendars, I somehow came into the possession of a small (approx. 12 inches wide x 6 inches wide x 7 inches high), multi-tiered, mechanically-hinged lucite carrying case — the small drawers swung open and outwards like a tool case. The thick lucite was of a semi-transparent, amber color shot through with smoky wisps of gray. The mechanism was like nothing I had ever seen and offered an organizing principle for small objects that I had never before considered. It closed shut with secure silver latches and had a handle for carrying. Looking back in time, I can see that it was, in fact, a discarded woman’s jewelry case.
It was to me the height of technical sophistication. I used it to carry a variety of small figurines and other precious objects on an overnight visit to my grandmother’s apartment in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. It was my own piece of luggage for this short trip from Crown Heights.
For that night away from home, I’d need an assortment of small plastic cowboys and soldiers, a few miniature pieces of furniture (a red table and chairs), some cut-out newspaper comic-strips, a tiny pocket knife, and some tightly folded sheets of paper bearing my latest handwritten story. After a large dinner (my grandmother was an incredible cook), we sat in the living room of the railroad flat, Lawrence Welk played a polka in the background, I opened my traveling case and looked at the organized contents. I was overwhelmed by the idea of these familiar objects transported to the warmth of my grandmother’s living room. I rolled against my grandmother’s soft body and listened to a soothing lullaby: Take Sominex tonight and sleep, safe and restful, sleep, sleep, sleep….
It was for that one trip that I made use of this wonderful carrying case. It disappeared from my sphere of attention as suddenly as it appeared. I did not even note its loss but, in later life, often thought about the pleasure it gave me.
