TUBE YOUR ENTHUSIASM (9)

One of 25 installments in a series of enthusiastic posts analyzing and celebrating a few of our favorite TV shows from the Fifties (1954–1963).
The year The Outer Limits came on TV, I was twelve and waiting for it eagerly, having been clued to it by Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine, which was a kind of adolescent drugstore bible of strange cinema for my generation. The Twilight Zone, a most bizarre violation of Fifties TV norms, had chilled my family for a few years before, with its perverse and sophisticated vicious plot circles and I was excited to see a show that promised even more macabre and grotesque rubber suits and alien fantasies.
The show began with a clashing dissonant chord, the logo pushing forward towards the viewer, an oscilloscope sine wave display, atmospheric woodwind and harp flutter, the condensation of the light display to one small glowing dot and a commanding voice reassuring the audience that “There is nothing wrong with your television set!” — then warning the viewer to not touch the set, that what you were seeing was out of your hands and under someone else’s control and with a promise to take one to somewhere near The Twilight Zone. This alone was very cool and the show did, in the first season, deliver various rubber monsters transported from other dimensions by radio waves, flying saucers loaded with stop-motion animated ant creatures and other impossible flights.
The first interdimensional swell-headed alien to appear was David McCallum, who played Illya Kuryakin, a very hip blond heartthrob, on The Man From U.N.C.L.E. It was thrilling and odd to see the ultimate cool spy-show dude appear with a giant brain, extended fingers, shiny star-man skin and the pained glistening expression of a misunderstood creature — out of its element, come to town to wreak physics-modifying havoc. I was so excited and did see a few more episodes, but my favorite shows seemed to always coincide with church service times, so that I could only see the first couple minutes of something like The Outer Limits before being whisked off to The Angry God Show. Damn!
