BEN FOLDS FIVE | BEN FOLDS FIVE | 1995
The thing you have to remember is that nothing else in 1995 sounded like Ben Folds Five. I was 24 years old and working in a job I loved like an addiction for a boss I hated like Ebola. As best I can remember, I was visiting friends in Tucson when a review of the album came on Fresh Air or All Things Considered, and I heard a couple of snippets of “Underground” and “Jackson Cannery.” I made my friends drive me to a record store the next day.
The album is composed of a musical vocabulary that had almost entirely been missing from pop for a decade and a half: rollicking piano, fuzzy, chunky bass, and falsetto harmonies. As someone who spent most of high school and college deeply immersed in the Boomer music of the ’60s and ’70s, it couldn’t have come along at a better time.
Even more than that, though, it brought an emotional vocabulary that I wasn’t hearing in any other music I was listening to at the time. “Underground” is an empowerment anthem played for laughs, but it’s kidding on the square — it really does want to give all the dorks and losers a safe and secret space to be themselves. If you’re 24, spent most of college in quiet despair, and have no idea what you want to do with your life, “Best Imitation of Myself” perfectly captures the face you put on to tell everybody else you’re doing OK.
If pressed, I would probably say that Ben Folds Five isn’t the band’s best album (it’s a close call, but I lean toward Whatever and Ever Amen) and doesn’t contain its best song (“Army”, from The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner), but it’s the album that makes me feel the most when I listen to it. Not just because of what the songs mean, but because of what they mean to me.
