John Hilgart has asked 54 friends of HiLobrow to contribute to the Hermenautic Tarot — a comic-book rorschach creative writing experiment in symbol-making and oracular speechifying. Each contributor was randomly assigned a card from the 4 COLOR PRINTING CMYK deck, which was created by Tom Hart — using images from Hilgart’s own 4CP archive — to fundraise for the Sequential Artists Workshop. This series of posts will eventually become a booklet. UPDATE: In 2018, we are adding an additional 24 cards to the deck, in order to arrive at a cartomantically correct 78 in total.
By drawing this card, you indicate that you have nearly come into possession of a tantalizing object or situation that has long captured your desire. The fruit you hunger for is forbidden or at least fabulous-looking, the objet petit apple of your own eye. And yet you pause. Indeed, this card is that pause, a time-out that allows you to ask and assess before crossing the point of no return.
Perhaps the food will be delicious, fortifying, or even illuminating. But things don’t look quite right. Not only can’t you see the forest for the trees, but you can’t even see the trees. All that compels you are bright shapes and colors, the shimmerings of enticement, but the vibrations seem to float free from the things themselves. Finding glories elsewhere, sometimes our own light drains away. Now more than ever it is time to face the slinky void that slips between objects and their appearances. Who has banned the fruit anyway? Maybe you’re just looking at a run-of-the-mill ground score whose flash cloaks a common trifle, past its prime, over-ripe and mushy. You must wrestle with Eve’s paradox: there is no way to know before you nibble the fruit.
REVERSED: This card indicates unexpected generosity, good luck, pennies from heaven.
