The Kalevala is a sequence of folkloric songs, runes and charms from the Karelia region of Finland, collected in the field and concatenated into epic form by Dr. Elias Lonnrot (1803-1884). The versions presented here are not translations or transliterations — they are respectful bastardizations, working from the 1963 English version of the Kalevala produced by the versatile and witty Francis Peabody Magoun Jr.
VAINAMOINEN IN NOVEMBER
[being a departure from The Kalevala, Rune 2]
Ride high, you leaves, upon the brassy
blast.
My powers are waning fast, so fast.
and Autumn’s fire is hollowing the bone.
Half-deaf I’ve grown
from squatting by the blowhole of creation,
waiting for inspiration,
waiting for a poem, for a line or two
to flap or flounder out of that howling flue.
When a poet utters,
the sky’s eardrum flutters.
My eyes ache from seeing.
My balls ache from being.
My head rings with a golden din.
It’s the dying stir of the fibers within,
the divine pang of me,
the truest twinge of my wizardry,
the pure and final sound.
If this tear falls, it will never hit the ground.
