THE PHIL SILVERS SHOW | 1955–1959

Long before Thanos ever dreamt about glitzing up his Power Mitten, one brave soul was fighting a weekly Infinity War from his murky barracks in a desolate army service base in Kansas. Like Dorothy before him, and later Thanos (not from Kansas), he sought to bend reality to his will, to materialise his indomitable desire for desire, ruthlessly melting those that opposed him, while exploiting the world’s most powerful Military-Industrial Complex for purposes far more pertinent than the meshugassured destruction that blighted America Nightmares during a period of otherwise unproblematically gluttonous consumption.

Thus did Sgt Bilko, channelled through the tortured incandescence of the eponymous star of The Phil Silvers Show, wrestle with an American Dream Absurdium, dancing to the Faustian Funk whereby the devout gambler’s excess of desire, hubris, glory and bathos are raised, teased and thwarted by that throbbing Kabbalistic bassline. The Gambler scoffs at your God, at your Physics, until we lose, and then we blame God and Physics for hating us.

Thus, semi-antithetical to the Nimoy/Spock Entity, the Silvers/Bilko Consortium is both a promise and a warning to us all. Bilko needed no Power Gems, nor Ruby Slippers, fetching as they may be. For Bilko, the cosmic sheen of his perfect bald pate was more than sufficient, radiating those sublime dialectics of desire, guilt, genius and agony that typify the brilliance of the Brave and the Bald.

Cowing and confronting the will of God, Silvers, along with the brilliant supporting cast and writers, squeezed these narratives of abject mana into a mere 24 minutes, with a minimum of 12 yocks per minutes. The Phil Silvers Show remains TV’s transcendent achievement. Bilko, like Bach, Beethoven and the Beatles, defined a nascent genre with sufficient aesthetic absolutism to transfix those who dared to follow in its wake.
