They say the city is no place for a hunter. Recent centuries have atrophied the vital skills of our forest and savanna ancestry. You can’t sniff out a rabbit. (Can you?) Could you even climb a tree? Instead of falling under a screen’s spell or mooning over the stars, the tracker assays the bumps and fissures of the surface underfoot. Watch for serrated flecks of fishscale, fur torn from overcoats, the blush in a patch of pavement that hints at hidden groundwater. Commuters gawk as the tracker passes. This discipline brings isolation. High awareness and deep depression often look the same. So do the assassin and the gumshoe. The tracker is watched in turn through the windows and cameras overhead. This trail could lead to trap or treasure, or past the city limits into a long hermitage. Is the tracker indifferent to outcomes? No, but the traces themselves call loudest. The tracker follows like a song pursues a melody.
REVERSED: Move along, folks. Nothing to see here. There’s no face in that carpet, only heat and protection for the floor. The mind is crazy for patterns, but guess what? You are not secretly the Messiah.
