One in a series of enthusiastic posts, contributed by HILOBROW friends and regulars during 2017, on the subject of our favorite squads.

Where to begin with the Beat Generation? Brilliant drunken uncles of my youth. They’d show up on holidays in my mind, shirtless and disheveled, skipping church and swearing like sailors and dropping cigarette ashes on my mother’s crushed velvet couch. They’d sweep me up in their arms, swing me around by my elbows, trample the flowers and break the windows and set the house on fire, then do the dishes, cook an elaborate meal, write some rhythmic, insightful verse about love and loss or ecstasy and enlightenment, and catch the next ride out of town — leaving me awake and alone in my middle class bedroom, passions aflame and morals asunder, wondering how I could ever escape and if I would ever be brave enough.
They introduced me to Zen Buddhism and spiritual environmentalism, freight trains and semis, weed and wine and sex in the midwest with the migrant farm workers. They taught me to take chances, to trust the universe, to think, to live, to write like my life depended on it.
How did I miss their sexism? Their racism? Their trust fund privilege and sense of entitlement? Middle-class white boys, every last one of them, they romanticized the notion of nonconformity, blurring the lines between morality and sin as they preached a gospel of radical self discovery and hallucinogenic hedonism. Anti-intellectuals who went to Columbia. Anti-establishmentarians who listened to improvisational jazz. Kerouac and Casady, Ginsberg and Ferlinghetti, Burroughs and Snyder and Corso and Carr. Booze-drinking, darling killing, train-jumping, heart-breaking, passion-seeking, vision-questing Dharma bums. The funny thing is that Kerouac, the visionary who started it all, got to Columbia on a football scholarship. The irony is about as Beat as it gets.
