One in a series of enthusiastic posts, contributed by HILOBROW friends and regulars during 2017, on the subject of our favorite squads.

“We’re all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that’s all.” — Andrew Clarke, varsity wrestler, Shermer High School class of ‘84, Shermer Illinois, 60062

I was 13 when The Breakfast Club hit theaters, and I saw it opening weekend with a half-dozen friends, every last one of whom was hiding a sea of insecurities behind their awkward, pocked faces. Not that I knew it at the time.

Or for years afterward, for that matter. I’ve always felt like I was missing some magical life secret — some easy-to-follow recipe for things like How to plan for the future, or How to care about personal finance, or How to respond to ‘What’s new?’ without boring people or oversharing. I was at least 35 before I finally figured out that nobody else knows what the hell they’re doing either. We’re all faking it. Some of us are just better at hiding it.

I like to think that it was different for The Shermer High Five. That over the course of eight cathartic hours on a single spring Saturday, buoyed by a common enemy, the doobage hidden in Brian’s pants, some aggressively macho ’80s dancing, and a lot of oversharing, they figured it all out. That inside every one of us is a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal. That the secret is there’s no secret.

Or not. Even now, even in my mid-40s, even after having seen that documentary at least 10 times, I still have trouble remembering that life lesson. If anyone knows Andrew today, or John, or Claire, or Brian, or Allison, please ask them. Ask them if it stuck with them after that day, if it changed their lives as much as I want to believe it did.

And if it didn’t? Maybe don’t tell me.

What do you think?

  1. All through high school, I secretly hoped that I would get the opportunity to go to detention and have my own Breakfast Club moment.

  2. I only had Saturday school once, and no enlightenment came from it. Just ask Jeff Hanson – he’ll concur.
I love this piece. More, please!
