One in a series of enthusiastic posts, contributed by HILOBROW friends and regulars during 2017, on the subject of our favorite squads.
Oh to be a pachuco! To roam the streets with my clica, looking grand and menacing like a troupe of dandies — but dangerous, testosterone-filled, with switchblades in our pockets, daring anyone to cross the lightning-swift cut of our street-based justice.
The original pachuco subculture originated in El Paso and Ciudad Juarez; tension between Los Angeles pachucos and white soldiers led to 1942’s Sleepy Lagoon murder and to the subsequent Zoot Suit Riots of 1943. Anti-Mexican racism is in the zeitgeist again, thanks to Donald Trump, so it’s no wonder that the Mark Taper Forum’s (Los Angeles) revival of Luis Valdez’s epic play Zoot Suit — the 1979 Broadway production of which starred Edward James Olmos as El Pachuco — is experiencing a Hamilton-like run on tickets. Valdez’s play is a dreamy meditation on Mexican-American resistance to a corrupt judiciary. It celebrates the pachuco zoot-suiters, who were roaming peacock ensembles of wonder: striking in their long coats and high-waisted pants. The awakening of a Mexican-American social consciousness that would climax with the Chicano movimiento began here.
I’m also a fan of the lesbian-led, leather-jacketed, mixed-race crew in Orson Welles’s Touch of Evil (1958), a sordidly handsome posse of mexy ne’er-do-wells and their Mexican-aping gringo accomplices — members of the Grandi gang, a narcotics cartel working on both sides of the border. But nothing compares to the zoot-suit pachucos of Valdez’s Zoot Suit, who make the Jets and the Sharks of West Side Story look like children playing games in a secret garden. Hair gleaming with pomade and gusto, and sporting an expressionistic garb one click south of clownish, two clicks north of wow, they roam Los Angeles’s Southland making racists pay.
