One in a series of enthusiastic posts, contributed by HILOBROW friends and regulars during 2017, on the subject of our favorite squads.
Family entertainment took on a different meaning in the ’70s — kids yesterday could see that the sympathetic street-gangs and apocalyptic nomad clusters and galactic rebel bands of our pop culture were at the other end of a continuum from the real-life agrarian communes and leftist militias that our own fraying post-patriarchal, mid-generation-war family structures were quivering in the middle of. “The nuclear family exploded!” as writer Don McGregor put it in his and artist P. Craig Russell’s surreal, lyrical War of the Worlds comic, which followed a troupe of resistance guerillas on a barbaric Earth transformed by Wells’ invaders. In our world’s concurrent Cold War we were all sure some post-historical wasteland was around the corner, but only a creator of Jack Kirby’s vision could make it something to look forward to.
His Kamandi, The Last Boy on Earth, a kind of Planet of the Apes & Rats & Tigers & Snakes, Etc., was a dystopian Tintin in which the title character, raised in a bunker while the never-specified “Great Disaster” turned the human/animal kingdom upside down, escapes to a world of sentient biped pirate leopards, mercenary wolves, rogue-capitalist reptiles, and feral men and women. In the course of surviving, a cohort collects around him including post-human metal-man Ben Boxer; wise evolved-dog scientist Doctor Canus; liberated pet-humans Spirit and Flower; populist tiger-crat Prince Tuftan; and visiting space-alien Pyra. Misfits who fit together, worlds reached across, was what appealed to me in the intentional family of the future, and it meant that any future could be faced.
For Kamandi, broken branches of the family tree were built-in — he was raised underground by his grandfather — and upheaval was the only constant: this family’s dog, Doctor Canus, was not the junior mascot but a guiding mind; Pyra, before selecting female form, is a pure-energy being self-identifying as “Me,” and then cell-dividing to be “We” — an anticipation of mainstream transgender awareness, down to the personal-plural pronoun. Today we form families from refugees taken in and elders cared for and the donor-parents of our same-sex spouse’s kids, and assemble communities in online groups and at protest encampments from across the planet. It’s now axiomatic that old orders mistake the “end of the world” for the end of theirs. I grew up in an age we couldn’t wait to get out of, whatever might come after, and while Kamandi may be the “last” master of the Earth, he and his friends are the citizens of a next world, not a final one.
