If you are planning for the holiday and clicking around right now, wondering what to watch, I can think of nothing better in these uncertain times than Futurestates. It is a series of short near future science fiction films by directors like Barry Jenkins (Moonlight — yes — Moonlight) and Alex Rivera (director of the Sleep Dealer, the best science fiction film since Children of Men) produced by ITVS that ran on a number of PBS stations from 2010 – 2014. Adventageous, directed by Jennifer Phang, began as a Futurestates short.
I haven’t watched the full series yet (there are five seasons), but the handful that I have seen have the politics, race and class analysis, and urgency that Black Mirror lacks, and feel so much more deserving of comparison to Rod Serling (also note the diversity of the filmmakers.) In a better world, this is the near-future series Netflix might have invested in, but in this world we’ve got, all of the episodes are available online for free, so you have no excuse. Happy holiday!
