Quirk Your Enthusiasm (21)
August 21, 2016
One of 25 installments in a series of posts analyzing and celebrating a few of our favorite New Wave songs from c. 1977–1982. Josh Glenn’s series introduction is here, and you can listen to the QUIRK YOUR ENTHUSIASM playlist here. Enjoy!
“DANCE THIS MESS AROUND” | THE B-52’S | 1979
I see New Wave as a cargo cult for Bubblegum music, fetishizing the molded plastic color palette, organ-driven dance beats, and topiary hairstyles with an impure faith in pop apotheosis. Originally Punk gave haven to the women, weirdos, and gays that stadium-filler Rock excluded. With the advent of American Hardcore, and their “Do You Want New Wave Or Do You Want The Truth?” ethos deriding New Wave as a poser marketing ploy, the girls and geeks shrugged and made the better dance music with infinitely more playful style.
The B-52’s, ever at the vanguard of cartoon expressionism, cobbled together surf twango dance music out of frat rock, dada and art-student frug. With “Dance This Mess Around” they proved they had a secret weapon that transcended their novelty twist impulses. Cindy Wilson’s voice combined a wanton slur and the cracked veneer of Ronnie Spector that made her yearning real even while you were laughing/shouting “Why won’t you dance with me? I’m not no Limburger!” on the dance floor. Of course you know all sixteen dances (especially the eight you have to imagine that go unsung), and your Shy Tuna is exemplary.
