scarlet circle

The Scarlet Circle (1943), murder mystery by Jonathan Stagge — pen name of Hugh Callingham Wheeler, who is best known under his moniker Patrick Quentin. Circle marking the spot — interesting to compare the meaning of a circle to that of an X, in this context.
