One in a series of 100 posts about the best science fiction novels published from 1904–33. HILOBROW’s Josh Glenn has named that era science fiction’s Radium Age; more info here. The complete Radium Age 100 list can be found here.

H.G. Wells’s The Food of the Gods (1904).

Does The Food of the Gods belong on a list of the 100 Best Radium Age Science Fiction novels? I originally determined that science fiction’s Scientific Romance era ended in 1903 because after that date, “H.G. Wells lost his touch.” The First Men in the Moon (1901) is Wells’s last terrific sf novel; The Food of the Gods is his first un-terrific one.

However! Un-terrific Wells is still pretty good. A chemical intended to make chickens grow larger accidentally causes plants, wasps, earwigs, and rats to grow as well… and it spawns a race of human giants, too, who must struggle to survive.

Fun fact: The 1977 Marvel Classics Comics edition of the story is great.
