The 1926 satirical sf novel King Goshawk and the Birds, by Irish playwright and novelist Eimar O’Duffy, is set in a future world devastated by progress. When King Goshawk, the supreme ruler among a caste of “king capitalists,” buys up all the wildflowers and songbirds, an aghast Dublin philosopher travels via the astral plane to Tír na nÓg. First the mythical Irish hero Cúchulainn, then his son Cuanduine, travel to Earth in order to combat the king capitalists. Thirty-five years before the hero of Robert Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land, these well-meaning aliens discover that cultural forms and norms are the most effective barrier to social or economic revolution.

Chapter 7: Cuanduine meets an Author of “Blue Bananas”
Another day Cuanduine and Mr. Robinson, strolling in the Green Park, saw an old gentleman of remarkable appearance come sauntering towards them. He wore a frock coat and silk hat, with a pair of carpet slippers. His shoulders were humped; his hands, clasped behind his back, were twined in the ends of his flowing hair; and his pensive eye gazed upon the ground.
“’Tis a poet composing a song,” said Cuanduine.
“Calculating profits, more likely,” said Mr. Robinson. “But he’s a poet all right. Most go-ahead poet in London, too. Holds his own even in America. That’s Larky Giggleswick. He and six others wrote the words of that song, ‘Blue Bananas,’ and between them they made a cool million out of it.”
Cuanduine, who had heard but stray snatches of the song, desired now to be made better acquainted with it.
“I can scarcely do justice to it without a band,” said Mr. Robinson modestly, “for the tune is a syncopated version of Beethoven’s Sonate Pathétique. However, here goes.”
These are the words of “Blue Bananas”:
Blue Bananas! Blue Bananas!
“Is it not a noble song?” demanded Mr. Robinson, wiping his brow. “I don’t claim to be much of an authority on music; but that song just gets me. A great song! A splendid song! And, by God, sir, a successful song! That song has given pleasure to the weariest business men on Broadway. The funny thing is that it didn’t take on when it first came out. Then one day a Boston hardware merchant took an action against a music shop for selling him the book of the words under false pretences. He said that the man behind the counter had assured him that there was no meaning in it; but the shopman swore that what he had said was that there was no more meaning in it than a tired business man could understand; and he called in a dozen tired business men to prove it. The case was dismissed with costs, and the song at once began to sell like hot cakes. It turned out afterwards that the whole thing was a publicity stunt got up by Giggleswick. Oh, there are no flies on Larky. Snooty’s the word for that poet. I hear, by the way, that he’s negotiating for the exclusive syncopation rights for Handel: he has Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart already, you know. One of these days, I imagine, there’ll be a coup d’état, and Giggleswick will proclaim himself Song King.”
Thus far Mr. Robinson’s discourse on the poetry of the period. ’Tis unfortunate that Cuanduine’s answer is not reported in the chronicles.
