L.A. DREAM TEAM | “THE DREAM TEAM IS IN THE HOUSE!” | 1985

The pop music canon is riddled with false fronts – party anthems and dance grooves and silly love songs that sound so simple when you first hear them, but reveal layers of heart once you scratch the veneer. “The Dream Team Is in the House!” from the L.A. Dream Team is not one of those songs.

Essentially four and a half minutes of throat-clearing, “Dream Team” is a song whose entire lyrical ambition is contained in the title – Rudy Pardee and Chris “Snake Puppy” Wilson just seem to want to let us know that they’ve made it through traffic. But what a hell of a four and a half minutes it is, from the opening fanfare (an electro riff on the Dragnet theme song), through some sampled Kraftwerk and a Gilligan’s Island theft, and all with a refrain (“The dre- dre- dre- dre- dre- dre- Dream Team, the dre- dre- dre- dre- dre- dre- Dream Team, the dre- dre- dre- dre- dre- dre- Dream Team is in-the-house”) that’s as much fun to sing along with as any hit song of the era ever produced. And then, at 2:30, we get the call-and-response of “Can you say yo baby yo baby yo?” and it gets even more fun, because yes, I can. I can say yo baby yo baby yo.

The song appeared in 1985, riding the tail end of hip-hop’s first wave but still a couple years before “Straight Outta Compton” blew up West Coast rap for good. (Fun fact: Jerry Heller, NWA manager, also managed the Dream Team!) No idea if it ever made it past the San Gabriel Mountains – but I’d imagine it didn’t, save for a What’s Happening Now!! cameo. (And really, did that make it past the San Gabriels?)

But for at least one 14-year-old kid growing up in L.A.’s east suburbs, that song dominated an entire school year, a soundtrack to keg parties, In-N-Out runs, beach buses, pep rallies, Lakers broadcasts, after-school loitering, and front-lawn breakdancing. Hearing it now, its utter lightness is what stands out. At the time, though, “Dream Team” was a shot of civic pride for a kid living on the very dullest outskirts of Los Angeles. Yes, I was on the far edge of L.A. No matter: I was in the house.
