Top HiLobrow posts 2012

The Discominimalism post — which really ought to be credited to Franklin Bruno — that we published on September 30 was picked up by Boing Boing, with the usual result: a temporary sharp spike in HiLobrow traffic. Which got me looking at our Google Analytics stats… something that I do about twice per year, because I really don’t care about traffic. Actually, I dislike knowing traffic stats — it’s a misleading and rigged popularity contest.

However, because I am slightly OCD and enjoy lists (cf. the many lists in my two 2012 books, SIGNIFICANT OBJECTS and UNBORED), I thought I’d amuse myself by publishing a variety of HiLobrow Unique Visitor Top 25 lists… I’m interested to hear what readers think of this information. How do you construe it?

Two prefatory notes: (1) Boing Boing’s influence on the shape of these lists ought not to be misunderestimated (as GWB might have put it). (2) I have written more HiLobrow posts than anyone else; it’s my blog, after all. Also, I’ve been posting to HiLobrow since day one, so the long-tail effect comes into play. I’d construe the frequency of my name on these lists, then, more as a statistical likelihood rather than as a sign that I’m particularly good at writing posts that make traffic needles jump. Finally — I’m doubtlessly far more likely to send my own posts to Boing Boing than others’…
