R+M (5): CHICKEN, ORCHID, CHAMPAGNE
Robot: Chicken, Orchid, Champagne — by Matt Rebholz
***
Robots and Monsters, a website that swaps custom-designed cartoons and pop art in exchange for a donation to charity, was field-tested in May 2007 by our friend and colleague Joe Alterio. Earlier this fall, Alterio and other artists relaunched the site as a going concern. This is the fifth in a ten-part series of cartoons and artworks created by R&M artists to raise money for the charity water.org.
Joe Alterio is an illustrator, animator, comic creator, and artist, interested in narrative structure, collective creativity, and the physical manifestations of story-telling. Joe has been at the forefront on using new technology to push forward the graphic narrative medium and how we interact with online art, from his early 2004 mobile comic The Basic Virus to his most recent work with Robots and Monsters. Alterio's work has appeared in the Boston Globe, Rolling Stone, Boing Boing, Drawn!, BarnesandNoble.com, The BLDGBLOG Book, and many other publications and venues. See more at www.joealterio.com.

Damn! Let’s hand it to Joe Alterio — a lesser man might have brought in inferior artists to the R+M project so that his own work would look better. Instead, he’s brought in some awesome talents. I love Rebholz, and had never heard of him before.
Thanks! Rebholz is one of my oldest friends, I’ve known him since I was 12. He is indeed amazing. He’s shown at galleries all over the world, and is a professor of printmaking in Texas. You can see more of his work at http://www.mattrebholz.com
