That’s a leather coin purse. The metal edge is the hinge and jaw that opens into a V to protect the edge of raw leather inside from getting torn up.

My first thought was that it’s a top-bound notebook, like these:

but thicker.
The way she’s holding it, it looks like she’s in the process of opening it with her thumb.

Wallet and badge case are possibilities as well.
